It's unfair to pin point who'd be the backbone of Gorillaz. Each character plays an important position that forms the very foundation of the band. They are also supported by the many collaborators, artists, voice actors and musicians that verify the very existence of the band. Without those aspects, there's nothing to support, at all. That's probably the main point of Gorillaz. It's about the music, not the icons. :l
